BYD Seal Towbar from TowRite: A Review

Thinking of towing with your BYD Seal? We break down the TowRite Heavy Duty Towbar's specs, fitment and what EV towing actually involves.

You’ve joined the electric vehicle revolution, and may we say the BYD Seal is a fine choice to go with! We often get asked if EVs can tow, and the answer is they most definitely can. In fact, the TowRite Heavy Duty towbar for the BYD Seal is one of our top sellers. Steady, reliable and tough - it’s built for EV owners who want to get towing without having to second-guess their setup.

Being a sedan, Seal drivers are often unsure if their vehicle has the same capabilities as an SUV or ute. Every vehicle has a towing capacity - your Seal won’t necessarily match a BYD Shark or an Isuzu MUX. This doesn’t mean you can’t tow with it. Just attach the right towbar and stick under the towing capacity and you’ll enjoy many towing escapades with your Seal.

As it's specifically designed for the BYD Seal (January 2024 models onwards), you can’t go wrong with this TowRite towbar. It’s designed to bolt onto your vehicle and get you towing without any dramas.

Here’s what you get.

Heavy Duty Towbar Specs

The TowRite Heavy Duty Towbar for the BYD Seal has the following features:

  • Towing Capacity: 1000kg (Vehicle specifications may vary, check your owner's manual)
  • Towball Weight Rating: 150kg
  • Towbar Class: Class 4 Vertical, 50mm x 50mm slide-in style ball mount
  • Included Hardware: Chrome finish tow ball, rated D-shackles, tow ball mount, hitch pin and R-clip
  • Construction: Steel with a powder-coated protective finish
  • Tested to Australian Standard AS/NZS4177
  • Warranty: TowRite Lifetime Warranty
  • Fitment: Vehicle-specific design for the BYD Seal Sedan (01/2024 on)

A vertical Class 4 towbar rated to 1000kg is a sensible match for a sedan EV. You could tow a small camper, a box trailer, or attach a bike rack without asking the Seal for more than it can give.

A Towbar Specifically Built for the Seal

EVs do tow differently to petrol or diesel cars. The battery weight sits low in the chassis, so the car will handle differently under load. Nothing major and you will get used to it, but you may notice the difference the first couple of times you head out.

The extra load will also noticeably shorten your driving range. Depending on how far you’re driving, you’ll need to plan your charging accordingly.

None of these are deal breakers though. EVs are very capable when it comes to towing, particularly if the towbar and wiring are exactly right for your vehicle. That’s what you’re getting here - a TowRite towbar built specifically for this EV and not adapted from a petrol or diesel equivalent or sold as a universal fit.

The towball, the shackles, the mount and the hardware are all tested and rated to work together and with your Seal. You can buy a matching ECU harness kit from our store, or we also offer the full towbar and wiring kit in one package

Built by TowRite in Brisbane

TowRite are a Brisbane-based company, which is important to us for a number of reasons. First, they build towbars to match Australian conditions. They get the context of our weather and our conditions, and their towbars are designed and tested locally to meet them head-on.

As more EVs land on Australian roads, having towing hardware designed and tested locally rather than adapted from an overseas market matters even more.

Every TowRite towbar is tested to AS/NZS4177, so you can rest assured standards are being met and exceeded. That comfort is further enhanced by a Lifetime Warranty, meaning you're covered for as long as you own the Seal.

Who Is It For?

The TowRite Heavy Duty Towbar is for any BYD Seal owner who wants to start using their EV to tow. Here’s what you will be able to do with it:

  • Attach a bike rack for family trips
  • Do tip runs with a box trailer
  • Use the same trailer for mulch, soil or gardening supplies from Bunnings
  • Tow a small camper for weekend getaways
  • Hook up a jetski and trailer and hit the coast for the day.

If you're planning to tow anything close to the Seal's upper capacity, it's worth a chat with our team about electric brake controllers and how towing will affect your driving range.

Final Verdict on The TowRite Towbar for the BYD Seal

The TowRite Heavy Duty Towbar takes the guesswork out of towing with a BYD Seal. It's rated appropriately for an EV sedan, built to the vehicle's exact fitment, and backed by a warranty that lasts as long as you own the car.
